The Role of Meiosis in Inheritance
Meiosis is a specialized form of cell division that occurs in the gonads (sex organs) to produce gametes (sex cells: sperm and egg cells). Unlike mitosis, which produces identical body cells for growth and repair, meiosis reduces the chromosome number by half. This ensures that when fertilization occurs, the resulting zygote has the correct diploid number of chromosomes.
Building on the concept of inheritance: Gametes carry genetic information from parents to offspring. If gametes were diploid (having two sets of chromosomes), the chromosome number would double with every generation. Meiosis prevents this by creating haploid cells.

Error: Believing meiosis is used for growth, tissue repair, or asexual reproduction.
Correction: Meiosis is only involved in the production of gametes (sexual reproduction). Mitosis is the process used for growth and repair. Students often incorrectly associate meiosis with repairing damaged DNA; this is not its primary biological purpose.
Error: Describing the stages of meiosis (Prophase I, Metaphase I, etc.) when asked to describe the process generally.
Correction: The syllabus explicitly states that details of the stages are not required. You must focus on the outcome: reduction of chromosome number and genetic variation. Including stage details is irrelevant and wastes time.
Describing Meiosis Correctly
When to use this phrase: When asked to 'describe meiosis' or 'state the purpose of meiosis'.
Correct phrasing: You must mention three key points: 1) It is a reduction division; 2) The chromosome number is halved (from diploid to haploid); 3) The resulting cells are genetically different.
Why examiners accept this: This directly addresses the definition of meiosis. Examiners look for the keywords reduction, halved, and genetically different. Do not describe the mechanical stages (e.g., 'chromosomes line up at the equator') unless specifically asked, as this is outside the required scope.
Example of a full mark answer:
