The Male Reproductive System

The Error: Students often think the urethra only carries urine or that the sperm ducts carry urine.

The Correct Understanding: The urethra is a shared pathway for both urine and sperm. The sperm ducts (vas deferens) specifically transport sperm from the testes to join the urethra. When asked for the structure that carries both, the answer is the urethra.

The Female Reproductive System
The female reproductive system produces egg cells, facilitates fertilisation, and supports the development of the fetus.

Identifying Fertilisation Location
Context: When asked to identify where fertilisation occurs in a diagram or describe the process.

Examiner Acceptance: Examiners look for the specific phrase 'fusion of the nuclei' from the male and female gametes. Simply saying 'sperm meets egg' is often insufficient because it does not explicitly address the genetic combination required for sexual reproduction.

Example: Instead of writing 'The sperm enters the egg,' write 'The nucleus of the sperm fuses with the nucleus of the egg cell.' This directly addresses the definition of fertilisation.

Fertilisation
Fertilisation is defined as the fusion of the nuclei from a male gamete (sperm) and a female gamete (egg cell). This process restores the full number of chromosomes in the resulting zygote.
⚠︎ Defining Fertilisation Incorrectly
The Error: Many students define fertilisation as 'the sperm entering the egg' or 'the zygote forming.'

The Correct Understanding: While the sperm does enter the egg, the definition of fertilisation is specifically the fusion of the nuclei. The formation of the zygote is the result of fertilisation, not the definition itself. Additionally, fertilisation occurs in the oviduct, not the uterus or ovary.

Adaptive Features of Gametes
Gametes are specialized for their roles. Sperm must travel to the egg, while the egg must support early development.
Sperm Cell**Flagellum:** A long tail that rotates or whips to **swim** towards the egg. **Mitochondria:** Located in the mid-piece, they release **energy** (ATP) via respiration to power the flagellum for movement. **Acrosome:** Contains **enzymes** that digest the jelly coat of the egg cell, allowing the sperm to penetrate and fuse.
Egg CellEnergy Stores: Large amount of cytoplasm containing nutrients (yolk) to provide energy for the early cell divisions of the embryo before implantation.

Jelly Coat: A layer surrounding the egg that changes at fertilisation to prevent other sperm from entering (preventing polyspermy).

Zygote and Embryo
Zygote: The single cell formed immediately after fertilisation (fusion of nuclei).

Embryo: As the zygote undergoes mitosis, it becomes a ball of cells. This developing ball of cells is called an embryo.

The Error: Students often call the fertilised egg an 'embryo' immediately.

The Correct Understanding: The zygote is the initial single cell. It only becomes an embryo after it has divided into a ball of cells. Furthermore, the embryo implants into the lining of the uterus; it does not implant as a zygote.

Development of the Fetus
Once the embryo implants, it relies on structures to survive and grow.

Describing Placental Function
Context: When asked to describe the function of the placenta or umbilical cord.

Examiner Acceptance: You must mention that maternal and fetal blood are kept separate. If you do not state this, you lose marks for implying direct mixing of blood. Additionally, list specific substances (e.g., 'oxygen' and 'glucose') rather than just saying 'nutrients'.

Example: 'The placenta allows oxygen and glucose to pass from the mother's blood to the fetus's blood, while keeping the two blood supplies separate.'

Risks to the Fetus (Supplement)
Some pathogens (e.g., viruses like Rubella) and toxins (e.g., alcohol, nicotine) can pass across the placenta from the mother's blood to the fetus. This can affect fetal development or cause birth defects.
