Xylem and phloem
Xylem is the plant tissue responsible for:
- Transporting water and mineral ions from the roots to the rest of the plant (upwards only).
- Providing structural support to the plant stem.
Phloem is the plant tissue responsible for:
- Transporting sucrose and amino acids throughout the plant (bidirectional transport, known as translocation).

| Lignin is a tough, waterproof substance. It makes the walls strong and rigid, preventing the vessel from collapsing under pressure and providing support to the plant. |
| The cells die at maturity and lose their cytoplasm, nucleus, and end walls. This creates a continuous hollow tube with no obstruction for water flow. |
| The absence of cross walls (end walls) allows water to move freely up the vessel in a long, continuous column without having to pass through membranes. |
Error: Students often state that xylem transports food (sucrose) or that phloem transports water.
Correction:
- Xylem = Water + Mineral ions only. It also provides support.
- Phloem = Sucrose + Amino acids only. It does NOT transport water as its primary function.
Correction: Xylem transports or conducts water. Root hair cells are responsible for absorption.
Correction: Xylem vessels are dead at maturity. They contain no cell contents (no cytoplasm, nucleus, or organelles).
Correction: While 'end walls' is sometimes used colloquially, Cambridge examiners specifically look for the phrase 'no cross walls' or 'no end walls' to indicate the formation of a continuous tube. Ensure you use the syllabus terminology.
Why examiners accept this: Examiners require a direct link between the physical feature and its physiological benefit. Simply listing features (e.g., 'thick walls') is insufficient; you must explain why that feature helps.
Correct Usage Example:
'Xylem vessels have thick walls containing lignin. This provides structural support to the plant and prevents the vessel from collapsing under the tension of water columns.'
Key Phrase: Always use 'lignin' explicitly. Do not just say 'thick walls'; specify that they are lignified.
Why examiners accept this: Diagrams can be ambiguous. Examiners look for precise identification based on position and relative size.
Correct Usage Example:
In a stem cross-section, if asked to identify the tissue transporting sucrose, you must name phloem. If asked for the tissue providing support, name xylem. Do not just say 'vascular bundle' unless specifically asked for the group.
